Hosanna the donkey

Hosanna was brought into the UK from Romania in 2002. She had been a little working donkey, pulling a cart around a small town to earn her keep.

At that time, Donkeys in Eastern Europe could be bought cheaply, brought into this country and sold for a good pro t. The Dealer who bought Hosanna found it difficult to find a buyer for her. She was around 15 years old, showed signs of wear, poor feet, a mis-shapen back and neck, and an attitude. She was considered to be too unattractive to sell and would have been destined for slaughter had Jan and the sanctuary not stepped in.

She didn't like other donkeys, she didn't like people much, she preferred her own company. "thank you very much, go away and leave me alone".

Over the years, she's mellowed. Gilbert the gander has become a friend, she tolerates the miniature sheep who share her paddock, and she's even been known to put her ears forward when she's groomed. She is the star of our Christmas show where everybody loves her. A tough, determined little donkey, she's deserving of our respect.
