We were contacted by a gentleman about two “piglets” in need of rehoming. He had raised them from babies and kept them as pets. Unfortunately, he lost his home and could no longer care for them, and he desperately sought a place where they could live out the rest of their days.
When Bramley and Apple arrived, we were surprised to find that these so-called “piglets” were actually two enormous, full-grown pigs with big personalities. They immediately set about foraging for anything edible in their new surroundings! Apple is an older lady who is generally quiet but can assert herself when she chooses to. After we lost Bramley, we needed to find a companion for Apple who could tolerate her occasional bossiness.
Introducing sows to each other can be notoriously difficult, but we hoped that Freda, a calm and older pig, would make a good friend for Apple. Freda had previously lived with our grumpiest pig, Grandad Pig, until he passed away at the grand old age of 18.
If she could handle him, we reasoned, Apple would be a breeze! Our instincts proved correct. After a few grumbles, grunts, and disagreements over beds, Freda and Apple have become the best of friends. They are often seen snuggled up together, enjoying the quieter side of life in perfect companionship.
