These little chicks arrived at our sanctuary through a school hatching scheme. Such schemes are often highlighted in the National Curriculum as an excellent way for students to observe life cycles and make cross-curricular connections.
However, teachers may not always be aware of the ethical implications or the uncertain future awaiting the chicks once the scheme concludes. Unfortunately, many of these birds face bleak prospects after hatching.
These four chicks were among the fortunate ones. After a supporter of ours, who works at a primary school, learned about the incubation project, she alerted us to their plight. Initially cared for by Louise at her home, the chicks were later transferred to the sanctuary once they were big enough.
They seem to grow bigger each day and have quickly made themselves at home here. They will never experience cruelty or suffering; instead, they will be free to live their best lives in the safety and comfort of their forever home at the sanctuary.
