Our ducks have come to us from various circumstances, and here are just a couple of their rescue stories.
Five Runner ducks arrived together from an owner who was reducing his responsibilities in retirement. They joined our growing flock of assorted ducks. When someone once asked why they were called Runner ducks, a line of them promptly appeared from nowhere, sprinted past us, and disappeared in a cloud of dust, providing the perfect answer.
Then there’s Naomi, a very special Khaki Campbell duck who was deeply bonded with her owner. Naomi followed him everywhere and was known to sit on his lap on occasion. When Naomi’s duck partner passed away, she became the sole duck in her home.
With her owners moving house, the dilemma arose: would Naomi accept another duck if one was found for her, or would she be happier among a mixture of ducks? The decision was made to bring her to us.
The farewell was deeply emotional; her owner struggled to say goodbye amidst a lot of quacking. I hope he won’t mind me saying that I’ve never seen a grown man cry over a duck before, but the bond they shared was profoundly moving.
Remarkably, the very next morning, Naomi left her private space and waddled swiftly to join the others, fitting in seamlessly without any need for introductions.
