Freda had endured several years of solitary confinement under the most appalling conditions. She was wading through slurry up to her belly, with only a piece of broken tin for shelter, no bedding, and her diet consisting mainly of household scraps.
That this intelligent, kind-natured, and friendly sow had survived such deprivation was nothing short of a miracle.
We were informed that DEFRA and Trading Standards had been alerted about her conditions, but no action had been taken. Given what she had endured, Freda might have been expected to exhibit behavioural problems. Yet, the first thing she did upon arrival was to sink into the thick layer of hay we had rolled out for her.
There, she lay contentedly, grunting and chatting away until dinner arrived—sow nuts, apples, bananas, cakes… she seemed to think she was in heaven.
Freda is a gentle, chatty lady who loves nothing more than a belly rub.
