A few weeks ago, we received an urgent call for help. A group of goats was in a dire state and needed our immediate assistance.
Multiple goats were limping or walking on three legs, and one was found trapped on her side, unable to get up. They had no access to fresh water in the field, and there were rotting carcasses of eight of their companions scattered around.
Naturally, we set off to help. It was a 230-mile round trip, but we couldn’t bear to leave them to suffer the same fate as their friends.
We returned to the sanctuary at midnight, where we settled them in with a deep straw bed, plenty of hay, and fresh water for the night.
The following day, we arranged for a vet visit to assess their condition. They were all suffering from a severe lice infestation, which had caused intense itching and hair loss.
Faecal samples revealed a heavy worm burden, further weakening their condition. Blood tests indicated exposure to some form of toxin, and half of them were also experiencing painful foot problems.
Since then, they have received the necessary treatment and are looking significantly happier and healthier. Their personalities are starting to shine through, and they are beginning to trust us, despite all they have endured.
