We were asked if we could find space for six Jersey bull calves. These calves, only a few days old, were destined to be shot. Like many male calves in the dairy industry, they were considered an unwanted byproduct, with the simplest solution being to have them killed.
When we contacted their owner, he was more than willing to let them go to a new home, where they would at least have a chance at life.
The demand for milk and dairy products means that the milk cows produce for their newborn calves is instead used for human consumption, necessitating the separation of the calves from their mothers just a few days after birth.
The Jersey boys have been together since the moment they were taken from their mothers, forming a close bond and rarely straying far from one another.
