The owners of these charming little sheep decided they could no longer afford to breed from them or keep them through another winter. We agreed to take them in so they could live out the rest of their days happily here at the sanctuary.
Soays are a breed of domestic sheep descended from a population of feral sheep on an island in the Western Isles of Scotland, and they have certainly inherited the feral genetics of their wild ancestors! They can be more challenging to manage than our other sheep, but we wouldn’t be without them.
They will happily live alongside our other elderly sheep, although they still tend to stick together in their little Soay group!
