The summer months have officially arrived – even if the weather hasn’t quite made up its mind yet! After a typically unpredictable May filled with glorious sunshine one day and torrential rain the next, we’re heading into June with our boots muddy but our spirits high.
With bank holidays, half-term breaks and ever-changing skies, it’s been a hectic time for many, but at the Sanctuary, our work doesn’t pause. Come rain, shine or stormy skies, we’re here 365 days a year, 7 days a week, caring for our residents and making sure every animal feels safe, loved and looked after.
May was one of our busiest months yet.
We’ve had it all – from welcoming new rescues to hosting community events and rolling up our sleeves for some serious seasonal care.
Our fantastic team has sheared alpacas and sheep, prepared and delivered a packed Sheepover weekend, and even found time to host a creative online drawing session. We’ve also had beautiful new faces join us, like little Rainbow the lamb and Lucky the chick, each with their own rescue story and new start at the Sanctuary.
As we step into June, we’re already gearing up for more events, more stories, and more life-saving work. And none of it would be possible without the generosity of our supporters, the dedication of our team, and the resilience of our animals.
So thank you – whether you’ve donated, visited or shared our posts. You’re part of this journey, and we can’t wait to share the next chapter with you.
Stay tuned for more updates throughout the month – and if you’re joining us for our next Sheepover on 28th June, we’ll see you there!
Say hello to Rainbow, our newest resident at the Sanctuary!
This little sweetheart has settled in beautifully and is already winning hearts with her gentle nature.
We’re so happy to have her with us – she’s a perfect addition to the family.
We recently welcomed a very special new arrival – Lucky, a tiny chick rescued by kind-hearted people after she was seen falling from the sky, likely dropped by a predator.
After being turned away elsewhere, she found safety here with us.
She’s now warm, well-fed, and enjoying the love and care she deserves. Welcome to your forever home, Lucky!
This year marked our second time shearing our alpacas ourselves – and we’re getting pretty good at it!
Over the years, we’ve had help from SimplyAlpaca , but this marks our second year doing it on our own.
With Steph on shearing duty, Louise handling the feet, and Nick P trimming top knots, the team worked together smoothly and calmly. The alpacas were relaxed throughout and are now looking sleek, happy and much cooler without their thick coats.
Great job, team – same time next year!
Wow – what an amazing Sheepover weekend we had! It was our biggest turnout to date, with more than 40 tents, motorhomes and vans joining us for a fantastic overnight experience.
The weather was just right, and our friends at Golden Glaze Doughnuts kept everyone refreshed with their delicious drinks, hot beverages and – of course – their legendary doughnuts. We were also thrilled to welcome Food Genie for the first time, serving up fabulous vegan food that earned rave reviews.
The sheep loved the attention and chaos, and reservations are already flying in for our next Sheepover on 28th June. We can’t wait to do it all again!
Shearing day at the Sanctuary is always a big one! With an early start and a full team on hand, we worked hard to make the process as quick and stress-free as possible for our flock.
Our fantastic shearers were incredibly gentle, and before long the sheep were back with their friends, munching away and showing off their fresh new haircuts.
It’s always a demanding day – and yes, we’re a bit battered and bruised – but seeing the sheep cool, calm and content makes it all worthwhile.
We recently hosted a brilliant live wildlife drawing class, with more than 30 people joining us online to celebrate our residents through art.
Led by the talented illustrator Laura Cuppage, the session featured live sketching of Buster the cow (who eventually stood still), Twiglet and Mabel (who were angels with a tummy rub), and the cheeky duo Bonnie and Bobby, who nearly ate the camera stand!
Laura shared expert tips on drawing moving animals and inspired plenty of creativity. It was such a fun and lively evening – thank you to everyone who joined us!
We marked World Donkey Day with our beloved boys, Clive and Ernie.
The day highlights the hard work and resilience of donkeys across the world – animals who are so often undervalued. Clive and Ernie will always enjoy full bellies, warm beds, and the kindness they deserve here at the Sanctuary.
Here’s to a better world for all donkeys – starting with these two very special ones.
