Nature on the farm

Over the 17 years we have been here the wildlife seems to have flourished, possibly as we do not use pesticides or fertilisers of any kind and the pastures are grazed naturally by the Sanctuary sheep, cows and horses.

Alongside our rescued farm animals there are hares, foxes, bats and grass snakes - with fish and a kingfisher living in the stream. Red poppies have appeared, huge fungi and the hawthorn hedges in May are beautiful. There is also a resident pair of buzzards who produced and reared a chick in 2012. We do not spray the nettles or thistles as these are important feeding areas for moths and butterflies.

We have worked with local conservation agencies in the past and we hope with their help to develop the land as a haven for wildlife in the future.
